Over the weekend 21st-22nd January, 14 young sailors visited Durleigh to spend two days training and racing in their Optimist sailing dinghies.

The children, aged 9 to 13, were attending the first ever dedicated Optimist event to be held at Durleigh which was part of a series of sessions being held throughout the South West this winter. The event was organised by the Optimist Class Association and hosted jointly by SYCSA and Durleigh Sailing Club. A big thanks goes to all the volunteers who turned up to help with safety cover, food, race officer and all the other duties required by an event like this.

Winds of up to 25 miles per hour persisted throughout the weekend, giving the youngsters a splendid opportunity to learn to sail well in very challenging conditions. The group’s abilities ranged from beginner through to squad level experts, but they all rose to the challenge and were still smiling even after two full days. YouTube Video

Results of the 4-race series was
1st GBR 5729 Rosie Williamson from Bowmoor (Glos)
2nd GBR 5999 Jazzy Waite from Restronguet (Cornwall)
3rd GBR 6114 Ryan Bush from BCYC (Axbridge)
New-to-racing sailors Caitlin Webster and Hollie Hunt represented Durleigh and achieved creditable results in very difficult conditions against Zone and Development Squad competitors.
